HCA: Extending the temporary suspension of commitment letter requirement for orthognathic surgery

The Health Care Authority (HCA) recently sent the following alert to dental Medicaid providers.

Attention orthodontic and oral surgery providers:

The Health Care Authority (HCA) is extending the temporary suspension for the commitment letter requirement for orthognathic surgery through March 31, 2023.

HCA sent a provider alert on May 13, 2022, notifying providers that effective June 1, 2022, through November 30, 2022, the requirement for providers to submit a commitment letter from an oral surgeon in addition to the provider’s prior authorization (PA) request for orthodontic treatment requiring orthognathic surgery had been temporarily suspended. This temporary suspension has been extended through March 31, 2023.

Even though the requirement to submit a commitment letter is waived for this extended period, PA is still required for orthodontic treatment.
