ASDA, ADA Support Dental Student Borrowers
Sohaib Soliman, UW School of Dentistry 3rd-year student and newly-elected American Student Dental Association (ASDA) national president, is wasting no time in using his presidential term to benefit dental students across the country. Barely a month after being elected, Soliman—joined by ASDA Executive Director Nancy Honeycutt, American Dental Association (ADA) President Dr. Carol Gomez Summerhays and ADA Executive Director Dr. Kathleen O’Loughlin—expressed strong support for H.R. 4223, the Protecting Our Students by Terminating Graduate Rates that Add to Debt Act (the “POST GRAD Act”).
In a letter to members of the House Committee on Education and Workforce, they write, “Today’s graduating dental students face astronomical levels of educational debt, and many are reconsidering their postgraduate career plans because of it.”
According to the American Dental Education Association, the average educational debt for a senior dental student was $220,892. This legislation would help mitigate a portion of that debt by allowing eligible dental student loan borrowers to take advantage of the favorable borrowing terms and conditions of federal Direct Subsidized Loans currently offered to undergraduate students with a financial need, easing some of the stress dental students face upon graduation.
