ADA REVEALS "7 Signs of Drug Seeking Behavior by Patients"

In the January edition of Practice and Thrive, Dr. Harold Crossley examines seven red flag behaviors to look for when you suspect patients might be "doctor-shopping" in an attempt to get drugs for personal use or to sell. According to Crossley, "It's better to refer that stranger to an emergency room rather than risk the well-being of the patient and those with whom they come into contact. This action also protects your dental license and your staff. Prescribing controlled medications to someone who is not a patient of record opens up the possibility of abuse or re-sale of those medications." Read the entire article here.

Washington state's new Prescription Monitoring Program, profiled here,  electronically collects information on controlled substances prescribed and dispensed and gives prescribers a tool to make better-informed prescribing decisions by helping identify unsafe medication regimens, especially with patients who see multiple prescribers.
