SURGEON GENERAL'S ADDRESS INCLUDES ENDORSEMENT OF FLUORIDE
In a recent address to attendees at the National Oral Health Conference held in Huntsville, Alabama, U.S. Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin, MD, MBA, said "As Surgeon General I have been working hard to encourage individuals and communities to make healthy choices because I believe it is better to prevent illness and disease rather than treat it after it occurs. Community water fluoridation is one of the most effective choices communities can make to prevent health problems while actually improving the oral health of their citizens." In other water fluoridation news, the City of Portland is less than a month away from voting on optimally fluoridating Portland's water. Portland is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest that does not fluoridate. The pro-fluoridation campaign is called Healthy Kids Healthy Portland and is supported by dozens of medical, social service, business, and labor organizations. Healthy Kids Healthy Portland recently published "Dispelling the 7 Most Common Myths in Portland Fluoridation." This document can be found here.
