Dentists and other dental professionals are cordially invited to participate in the Pain Management and Substance Use Disorders Dental ECHO program, funded by the SAMHSA State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis grant program.

This 6-session ECHO program will build the capacity of dentists and their teams to identify and manage patients with oral pain or substance use disorders in the dental setting. Topics may include:

  • Patient’s Perceptions of Dental Pain and the Need for Opioids

  • Identifying Patients with Substance Use Disorder

    • The PDMP: What Is It and How Does It Work?

    • Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

  • Pharmacological and Non-pharmacological Alternatives to Opioids

  • Dental Pain Management of Patients on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) (Buprenorphine and Methadone)

  • Naloxone: Should this Medication be in my Medical Emergency Kit?

  • Difficult Conversations with Patients
