National Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides an avenue to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs in a safe, responsible, and convenient way.
The majority of prescription drug misuse starts with individuals using a medication not prescribed for them. Safely disposing of unused and potentially addictive drugs helps to save lives by ensuring that such medications are not stolen and misused.
During National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, temporary collection sites are set up in local communities throughout the country for safe disposal of prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous. During the last Take Back Day on April 27, 2019, over 930,000 pounds of unwanted medications were collected from around 6,250 collection sites nationwide. To date, the program has collected over 11,800,000 pounds of disposed prescription medications.
