The following is an update from the Washington State Department of Health regarding temporary practice permits for recent graduates.
On Friday, June 19, Governor Inslee issued Proclamation 20-59, relating to temporary practice permits for recent graduates entering the dental, pharmacy and dental hygienist professions.
Until the proclamation’s expiration, at midnight on July 19, a recent student may apply for a temporary practice permit without taking the required exam or examinations due to the impact of COVID-19 on exam availability.

An interested individual should apply using the full licensure application. A temporary practice permit application is not required. The department’s provider credentialing search, a publicly facing database, will indicate that a temporary license was issued. Using the full licensure application, however, will allow for a quicker transition to full licensure once the exam or exams are successfully completed and avoid an additional application fee.
The proclamation requires the applicant under this process to attest to the unavailability of an exam. The department’s credentialing team will seek the attestation via email from the applicant. A special attestation form is not required. Applicants should add doh.wa.gov to their safe senders list to ensure receipt of the department’s correspondence.
