Opposing Dental Midlevel Providers
WSDA opposes the creation of dental midlevel providers who can perform irreversible, surgical procedures outside of the direct supervision of a dentist. Fundamentally, the Association believes that barriers to dental care are not the result of a lack of dental workforce and that dental midlevel providers are not a solution for improving dental access. Dental residents are a superior alternative to dental midlevel providers. Unlike midlevel providers, dental residents can treat more medically complex cases. Dental residents are also a more efficient use of state funds as in most cases, federal funding covers the majority of resident-related expenses.
