Maintaining the Dental Safety Net for Children
Washington state has one of the best dental safety nets for children in the nation. Washington has the second lowest percentage of 3rd grade students with untreated decay and leads the nation with the highest percentage of Medicaid-eligible children ages 1-5 receiving preventive dental care. Our state has been successful in providing access to Medicaid-eligible children because there has been consistent funding for patient navigators, provider reimbursement rates, and provider and parent education. The cornerstone of Washington’s dental safety net for children is the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) program which provides enhanced funding for treatment and care coordination for pre-school children. WSDA will continue to support innovative initiatives like the ABCD program and efforts to maintain our state’s dental safety net for children.
