Every day in Washington State people live with dental pain because they lack the resources to see a dentist. Although adult dental Medicaid will be restored in the coming months, it won't cover all the need throughout Washington  — we need your help to increase the dental safety net. While nearly all dentists give back to their communities, the need is still great, and many organizations have clinics or hold events where volunteers are needed. We've gathered up information about some of the events and organizations across the state where you (and often, your staff) can volunteer to help those without dental health care resources.

Words and images: UW STUDENTS IN HAITI 

Ed. note: When we learned that UW students would be heading to Haiti, we asked them to write about the people they helped while they were there ­— to tell their stories of courage. Four students — Mehak Ahluwalia, Sean Collette, Esther Ra and  Ryan Zentz  — did just that. Here, in their own words and pictures, are their experiences.

As I stepped out of the plane onto the terminal I felt a gust of warm wind and the faint sound of the steel drums floating through the air. “Wow,” I thought, “I really must be spending my Spring break in the Caribbean!” Although we certainly landed on a Caribbean Island, our team had just arrived into the poorest country in the western hemisphere, Haiti.

 At two recent events, WSDA member dentists, their staff and other volunteers rallied to deliver oral health care to adults who normally would have limited or no access. Since the loss of adult dental Medicaid two years ago, adults have had to go without all but emergent care in the state, leaving area dentists to do all they can to fill in the gaps

WOHF salutes Volunteers during National Volunteer Week
