Reclassification of Hydrocodone Products

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has issued a final rule that reclassifies hydrocodone combination products (HCPs) such as Vicodin from Schedule III to Schedule II drugs. Effective October 6, 2014, this reclassification will have an impact on dentist’s ability to prescribe HCPs. Dentists that currently hold a Schedule III DEA registration will need to re-register with the DEA for Schedule II authority in order to continue prescribing hydrocodone combination products.

2014 Citizens of the Year: Drs. Amy Winston and Bart Johnson

Each year, WSDA members from across the state nominate one of their own to receive the Association’s highest honor, the Citizen of the Year Award. Steeped in tradition, the award honors the dentist who has displayed exemplary service to the community through civic/charitable activities, whether dental-related or not. 

This year, rather than choosing just one recipient, the Committee on Recognition chose two: Drs. Bart Johnson and Amy Winston, the workhorse partnership behind four charitable programs in Seattle (five, if you count the staggering amount of uncompensated care they provide at their private practice) designed to create access for some of the state’s most vulnerable populations — medically-complex and challenging patients, the poor and the uninsured, and patients with cancer and renal failure.

Medicaid Claim Form Updates

Attention Medicaid Providers: Effective November 1, 2014, the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) will only accept dental paper claims submitted on the new ADA paper claim form (version 2012). The HCA plans to begin accepting the new ADA paper claim form by October 19, 2014 and will be accepting both the 2006 and 2012 version until November 1, 2014.
