Last week, the WSDA Board of Directors formally created the Task Force on Public Policy Development. The idea for this task force was generated last fall at a Board of Directors retreat. The Task Force will be charged with overseeing the development of a long-term (10-15 year) public policy agenda focused on measurable, evidence-based solutions for improving oral health. The public policy agenda will include policy recommendations for the following topics:
- Preventive care and education
- Community water fluoridation
- Community health centers
- Free clinics and volunteer charitable care programs
- Dental residency programs
- Emergency room referral programs
- Loan repayment programs
- Dental Medicaid programs and financing
- Dental workforce recruitment and training
The Board appointed the following WSDA members to serve on the Task Force: Dr. Christopher W. Herzog, chair; Dr. Mark Koday; Dr. Tyrone F. Rodriguez; Dr. Rodney B. Wentworth; and Dr. Amy M. Winston.
The Task Force on Public Policy Development will submit policy proposals to the Board of Directors for consideration. The Board of Directors will determine if the proposals should be submitted to the House of Delegates as part of the Association's legislative agenda or can be implemented with action of the Board or staff. The Task Force has also been given the ability to organize sub-groups composed of issue-specific experts to provide recommendations to the Task Force as needed.
The Board anticipates this process will take several years to complete. Please refer questions about the Task Force to Bracken Killpack, Vice President of Government Affairs, at email@example.com or 800-448-3368.
