« WSDA members provide free dental care to Veterans »

Dr. Theresa Cheng shares a laugh with volunteers at her recent Veterans event - Photo courtesy of Don Borin/Stopactionphotography.org.

Two weeks ago, Drs. Theresa Cheng and Ken Akimoto continued their yearly tradition of offering free dental care to Veterans by performing exams, x-rays, cleanings, and extractions for Veterans —  for a total of more than $13,000 in donated dental care. Cheng and Akimoto worked with five of their staff members (Jen Shelton, Pennie Morehead, Aliecea Hehn, Lori Cantrell, and Elaine Black), three hygienists (Tanya Taylor, Marla Gallagher and Anna Ristic), and seven UW students (Tracy Ngo, Jenn Gee, Christine Hong, Ammy Bhathal, Anna Hanover, Austin Wessling, and Rami Salha) to bring care to 25 veterans and five of their spouses. The veterans served in wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. Also that day, King County Veterans' Affairs department and DSHS were on hand to provide other assistance to qualified Veterans and their families; PCC provided a big bag of groceries to each Veteran; Panera donated coffee and pastries; and Alicia Uyeda provided chair massages. Several Veterans acknowledged that it was the first massage they’d ever received!
Cheng called the day “Crazy, fun and rewarding,” and noted that they now have 45 dentists enrolled in a network that provides ongoing dental care to Veterans.
