Dental offices throughout Washington state create a wide variety of waste during the course of a normal business day. Hazardous waste can result from the use of amalgam, fluorescent bulbs, X-ray fixer and cleaning and disinfecting solutions. It is important that dentists comply with laws and regulations and dispose of these wastes properly.
The Department of Ecology (DOE) has developed a Hazardous Waste Services Directory on their website to help dentists and other health care professionals properly dispose of their hazardous waste. The Dental Waste Management Directory specifically lists 16 different waste disposal companies in Washington and throughout the country who have all been approved by DOE. You can view this directory at http://apps.ecy.wa.gov/hwsd/default.htm.
In addition to the hazardous waste directory, DOE has developed a Best Management Practices for Dental Office Waste guide which is available on The Source. Please also take time to review WSDA’s dental specific Accident Prevention Program (APP) on The Source. The APP was formulated in conjunction with the Department of Labor & Industries and outlines health and safety issues in dental offices including hazard communication practices.
