At its December 11 meeting DQAC began the process to modify the rules requiring AEDs in dental offices. When the rule process is finished (likely in March 2010) AEDS will be required only in offices that use “any type of sedation”. Offices using only topical or local anesthetics will be excluded from the rule. The requirement will continue to apply to use of minimal sedation (nitrous oxide and other inhalants). Adjoining offices may also share use of a single AED, provided it is within reach and available for use within 60 seconds, Finally, dentists will not be required to provide 24 hour on-call availability following administration of local anesthesia (but will be required to do so following administration of other anesthesia).
