Remember to Volunteer for Special Smiles
The WSDA has partnered with Special Olympics Washington’s Special Smiles program to help provide free oral health screenings to their 14,500 Washington athletes!
We are currently in need of volunteers to help provide screenings at regional events across the state. To make this program a success, we need you and your team to volunteer in your area.
There are four regions in Washington:
- Northwest (Mountlake Terrace to the Canadian border)
- King County
All of these regions host events throughout the year at which oral health screenings can occur.
As a volunteer, you will not be required to bring any equipment or supplies; just bring yourself, your team and all of your oral health expertise! Forms will be provided to athletes who need follow-up care, and volunteer screeners are encouraged to serve as a dental home for athletes in their area. Hygienists and staff are encouraged to attend to provide basic oral health education.
Lack of access to dental care is one of the biggest healthcare-related issues among individuals with intellectual disabilities. Volunteer today to help lessen the oral health care disparity facing these Washington athletes!
Contact Victoria Mehren, Special Olympics Washington Director of Health and Training, at firstname.lastname@example.org or (206) 681-9381 to schedule screenings at an event.
