Oral Anticoagulant Drug Update

The ADA’s Oral Health Topics resource on Anticoagulant and Antiplatelet Medications and Dental Procedures has recently been updated to include information on the newer target-specific oral anticoagulant drugs, such as Pradaxa® and Eliquis®, in patients undergoing dental procedures. 

There is strong evidence for the older medications (e.g., warfarin), as well as limited evidence for the newer targeted medications that, for most patients, it is not necessary to alter anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy prior to dental intervention.
